Final Soviet October Revolution Parade, 1990 Парад 7 ноября

This is the parade in Moscow's Red Square, devoted to the 73rd anniversary to the Great October Socialist Revolution, 7 November, 1990. The year 1990 would see a continuation of the drastic changes in the world that began in 1989. With the reunification of Germany back in October, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait back in August (which instigated the Gulf War US lead military intervention in January 1991). The chaos which permeated throughout the Eastern bloc the previous year was spilling over into the Soviet Union. This marked a time of great instability and decline for the USSR. Perestroika (restructuring) was failing to deliver the positive promises of restructuring it announced it would when it was first implemented in 1987. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's Glasnot (Openess) policy, while positive for freedom of speech in the nation, also had the unintended consequence of opening the floodgates of long repressed nationalist feelings in many of the Union Republics. At the time of this parade many secessionist movements were taking place, and the mood in Red Square during this parade was not one of optimism, but sombreness, as the tapestry of the USSR was being unwoven. This would be the last time the October Revolution would be commemorated before the USSR collapsed a year later. Indeed the year of 1990 would be remembered as the final year for all Soviet military parades (Victory Day, and October Revolution) on Red Square. Breaking with tradition, Mikhail ...

Soviet October Revolution Parade, 1977 Part I Парад 7 ноября

This is the parade in Moscow's Red Square, devoted to the 60th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, 7 November, 1977. The Soviet Union celebrates 60 years of October this year. For the anniversary the USSR national anthem was updated with new lyrics, which can be heard here in the beginning of the broadcast. Also, the constitution of the USSR received an update as well. The update solidified the CPSU's leading role in Soviet society, as well as calling the Soviet Union a nation of developed socialism. This marked a time of unserpassed stability and peace for the USSR in the 20th century. However, on the negative side the Soviet economy was seeing stagnation. The space station, Salyut 6 was also launched in 1977. Presiding over the military parade is Minister of Defense of the USSR, Marshal of the Soviet Union Dmitriy Ustinov. Commanding the parade is commander of the Moscow Military District, General of the Army (he received his promotion that year) Vladimir Govorov. Music performed by the Moscow Military District Orchestra, directed by Colonel Nikolai Mikhailov.

The Soviet Union enters the 1990s in a state of uncertainty with economic restructuring problems, as well as nationlistic seccessionist movements beginning to take hold throughout the country. Shaken from The Revolutions of 1989 throughout Eastern Europe, the future of the Soviet Union was brought into question. Soviet October Revolution Parade, 1987 Парад 7 ноября

This is the parade in Red Square, devoted to the 70th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, 7 November 1987. The Soviet Union celebrates 70 years of October this year. General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms of "glasnost" (openness), and "perestroika" (restructuring) were introduced this year, and In the spirit of peretroika the way Red Square was decorated for these celebratory parades was changed this year. From 1967 to 1986, the style in which Red Square was decorted in for parades was very consistant. The new style introduced in 1987 was somewhat of a throwback to the theme in which Red Square was decorated in from the mid 1950s through 1967. The spirit of optimism and hope for the future in the Soviet Union looked especially bright in Red Square during this year's parade. East-West relations were also signifigantly improving this year, and by New Years of 1988, the threat of nuclear war, which was so prominant earlier in the decade, seemed to all but vanish. In December 1987, Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan signed the INF treaty (which eliminated intermediate range class nuclear missiles in both nations). Presiding over the military parade is newly appointed Minister of Defense of the USSR, General of the Army Dmitriy Yazov. Commanding the parade is commander of the Moscow Military District, Colonel General Vladimir Arkhipov. Music performed by the Moscow Military District Orchestra, directed by Major General Nikolai Mikhailov.
