I put this medley together to show my interpretation of some of my favorite Jon Theodore/The Mars Volta moments. I am not claiming these to be his or The Mars Volta's most challenging parts, they are just some of my favourites from my favourite Volta drummer. I did this solely to challenge myself. Once I had chosen the grooves I wanted I arranged them using Ableton Live. The only changes I made to the arrangement was to shorten double chorus's that led into sections I wanted to use. I was aiming for flow, groove and climax with the arrangement. It was important to me that all the parts worked together and I kept it at 10mins in length. I did not make any changes to song tempos. I committed the whole medley to memory and learnt it all by ear. I do not transcribe. I played along to the medley only in my in-ears with no click track except at 8:27 where the drums stop momentarily. On Friday, February 10th, 1967, the Beatles threw a party at EMI Studios on Abbey Road in northwest London. The occasion: the recording of twenty-four bars of improvised crescendo, played by a forty-piece orchestra, for "A Day in the Life," the climax of the band's then-in-progress masterpiece, Sgt. It's a multistar movie.It is a straight remake of the Tamil hit "Kaadal Kottai". Director Rajendra Babu can be credited as the captain for a film which is technically and musically superior. The film is entertaining and interesting in its own right. "Yaare Neenu Cheluve" almost reminds one of an old-world romance. Here the main hero Surya (Ravichandran) and Kamli (Sangeeta) fall in love and romance each other through letters without having seen or met each other even once. And the first time they meet and get to know each other is the climax of the film. This is the absorbing aspect of the film which keeps it going till then. Ramesh in an even more brief appearance as an aspiring suitor to the heroine, distinguishes himself for what he is a natural actor who can breathe life into every movement and emotion of his. Prakash Rai as the heroine's brother-in-law, makes a forceful impact. His larger-than-life screen presence and impressive dialogue delivery coupled with the nuances of expression make for some riveting and touching scenes in the film. It is worth making that trip to the theatre to see Rai if only for a while.One elementary aspect, which is the essence of the film, is the tender romance between the lovers.Hamsalekha's music enhances the mood of the film. The songs are celebratory: they are tuneful and more than pleasing, perhaps heralding Hamsalekha once again as a talent after a lean patch. When Jon's 17 year old daughter said how much she loved this song, Jon decided to try it. He experienced a flood of inspiration. "Never has a piano part come together this fast" Jon says.
