A Farewell to Arms: Helen Hayes, Gary Cooper, and Adolphe Menjou (1932 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org A Farewell to Arms is a 1932 American drama film directed by Frank Borzage. The screenplay by Oliver HP Garrett and Benjamin Glazer is based on the 1929 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway. Set in Europe during World War I, the plot focuses on the tragic romance between Frederick Henry (Gary Cooper), an American ambulance driver serving in the Italian Army, and English Red Cross nurse Catherine Barkley (Helen Hayes). Major Rinaldi (Adolphe Menjou) envies their relationship and has Catherine transferred to Milan. When Frederick is wounded in battle, he finds himself in the hospital where Catherine works. They continue their affair until he returns to battle. Now-pregnant Catherine settles in Switzerland, and when her many letters to Henry remain unanswered because his responses are held up by the censors, she assumes he has abandoned her. As the Armistice nears, Frederick journeys to Switzerland to find Catherine, who dies in childbirth with him at her side. In his review in the New York Times, Mordaunt Hall said, "There is too much sentiment and not enough strength in the pictorial conception of Ernest Hemingway's novel . . . the film account skips too quickly from one episode to another and the hardships and other experiences of Lieutenant Henry are passed over too abruptly, being suggested rather than told . . . Gary Cooper gives an earnest and splendid portrayal [and] Helen Hayes is admirable as ...

Columbine High School Speech: President Clinton in Littleton, Colorado (1999)

thefilmarchive.org May 20, 1999 The Columbine High School massacre (often known simply as Columbine) was a school shooting which occurred on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, an unincorporated area of Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. Two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, embarked on a shooting spree in which a total of 12 students and 1 teacher were murdered. They also injured 21 other students directly, with three further people being injured while attempting to escape the school. The pair then committed suicide. It is the fourth-deadliest school massacre in United States history, after the 1927 Bath School disaster, 2007 Virginia Tech massacre and the 1966 University of Texas massacre, and remains the deadliest for an American high school. The massacre provoked debate regarding gun control laws, the availability of firearms within the United States and gun violence involving youths. Much discussion also centered on the nature of high school cliques, subcultures and bullying, in addition to the influence of violent movies and video games in American society. The shooting resulted in an increased emphasis on school security, and a moral panic aimed at goth culture, social outcasts, gun culture, the use of pharmaceutical anti-depressants by teenagers, teenage internet use and violent video games. Film Idle Hands - A teen comedy that tanked at the box office most likely because it was released immediately following the events at ...

Andrus was both the commandant of Nuremberg Prison (where the prisoners were kept) and Military Officer commanding the garrison protecting the Palace. Among the indicted who made their appearance were Hermann Göring (suicide by potassium cyanide), Rudolf Hess (life internment), Franz von Papen (Vice-Chancellor under Hitler, acquitted), Arthur Seyss-Inquart (Austrian Chancellor, Nazi Commissioner, hanged) and Joachim von Ribbentrop (Foreign Minister, hanged). Göring was not hanged as sentenced, but committed suicide by taking a cyanide pill smuggled into his cell. His suicide note stated that "being hanged is not appropriate for a man of [his] status". The trials took place in courtroom number 600, situated in the eastern wing of the Palace of Justice. The courtroom is still used, especially for murder trials. At the end of the Nuremberg Trials the courtroom was refurbished, and is ...

Lana Turner, Ezio Pinza and Debbie Reynolds in Mr. Imperium (1951 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Mr. Imperium (UK title: You Belong to My Heart) is a 1951 romantic drama film made by MGM. It was directed by Don Hartman who co-wrote screenplay with Edwin H. Knopf, based on play by Edwin H. Knopf. The music score is by Bronisław Kaper. One event in the film that slipped by un-noticed was when Lana Turner (at her own insistence and after an argument with the director) introduced "The Guadalajara Trio" by name, although they were not listed in the screen credits. In the manner of the way that Latino actors and musicians were often treated, they were also omitted from the credits of several other films like 'My Friend Irma Goes West" with Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis even though they did several beautiful songs. Cast Lana Turner as Fredda Barlo Ezio Pinza as Mr. Imperium Marjorie Main as Mrs. Cabot Barry Sullivan as Paul Hunter Cedric Hardwicke as Bernand Debbie Reynolds as Gwen Ann Codee as Anna Pelan The Guadalajara Trio (Francisco, Luis, Joseph) as Themselves Lana Turner (February 8, 1921 -- June 29, 1995) was an American actress. Discovered and signed to a film contract by MGM at the age of sixteen, Turner first attracted attention in They Won't Forget (1937). She played featured roles, often as the ingenue, in such films as Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938). During the early 1940s she established herself as a leading actress in such films as Johnny Eager (1941), Ziegfeld Girl (1941) and Somewhere I'll Find You (1942). She is known as ...
