The "xenosnakes" or cobra looking things are guards of the labs designed to attack and denature any intruders by infecting them. This happens to the guy with the red Mohawk - he's the disfigured one you see jumping from a ledge later. Other crew members get infected as well. Likewise, the Space Jockeys get pissed and go after the crew intruders for messing around in their labs. Fassbender gets his hands on some of the primordial life "goo" or DNA and takes it back to Prometheus

So, to continue, these humans figure out the clue on Earth and find their way back to the moon or planetoid where they locate underground "lifeform labs" which are run by space jockeys. There are many labs which are essentially built into delivery ships. The big head statue is a tribute to the Space Jockey fraternity, and the stone pieces arranged like eggs are monuments to each successfully completed colonization mission. The Prometheus crew basically stumble into somewhere they shouldn't be

Ok, to continue, the Space Jockey's are fashioned by the Engineers in the humanoid likeness of the Engineers, but are mere "tug pilots" designed to complete a one-way-trip of delivering lifeforms designed specifically for the world where they will be colonized and inhabit. The Space Jockeys then die once the mission is complete, but not before leaving a clue or inscription of their mission for future generations to find. We will never see the Engineers in the movie, but they are watching.

I bet that the space jockeys created humans and xenomorphs, and that big head in the temple is what a space jockey looks like without the helmet. The space jockeys wear helmets and suits to protect from the xenomorphs.

The face may be human but definitely humanoid. At least from alien 3 we know they can produce through dogs and hence mammals in general perhaps the face is not so earth centric but a general bio configuration that suits alien best for production. Who the f knows Geiger is nuts and Ridley equally so. Also the ribs are some suit for jockey you can see them opening slightly before camera pans away. Perhaps trying to trap alien baby in suit before bursts but fails ala 1979.
